Northwest Community Bail Fund

The Northwest Community Bail Fund (NCBF) works to address a variety of critical issues that disproportionately impact marginalized communities, with a specific focus on pretrial detention and cash bail. The cash bail system creates a two-tiered justice system between those who can afford bail and those who cannot, and disproportionately affects poor, Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and disabled people. Those unable to pay bail are often coerced into accepting guilty pleas, simply because they cannot afford to purchase their freedom. This increases vulnerability to further state violence and exacerbates long-term social and economic consequences. By paying bail, providing court support, and advocating for systemic change, we reduce immediate harm while pushing toward a future where bail funds are no longer needed. While we recognize this is only a temporary solution to a systemic problem, NCBF has also committed to reforming criminal punishment legislation and policy, and abolishing the cash bail system to advocate for life-affirming systemic transformations to shift the paradigm away from punishment and control toward community-based support, healing, and true accountability.
